From 15 steps to the starting line: Jason's 243-pound transformation
There was a time when the 15 steps leading to Jason’s apartment felt like Mount Everest.
Today, he calls them his “pre-GOLO nemesis.” Coming home meant gripping the railing, stopping halfway to catch his breath, and arriving at his front door drenched in sweat. His back hurt, his knees ached, and even after reaching his apartment, he needed time to recover.
At his highest weight of 424 pounds, even everyday activities were exhausting. Showering was difficult. He had to sit down and take breaks while cooking. By the time he arrived at work, he was already sweating and worn out.
His doctors recommended weight-loss surgery, but Jason wanted to pursue a different path.
Then, in May 2021, he discovered GOLO.
A goal that grew with him
Jason’s initial goal was to lose 40 pounds. But once he got started, his journey became about much more than a number on the scale. Pound by pound and month by month, he changed his habits, rebuilt his relationship with food, and began reclaiming his life.
In his first two years, Jason lost 228 pounds. To date, he has lost 243 pounds. Along the way, he gained something equally meaningful: the energy and confidence to take on things that once felt impossible.
Jason went from avoiding movement to actively seeking new challenges. So when a coworker sent him a link to a local 5K and said, “We should run this,” Jason decided to find out what he was capable of.
That race became a turning point. Jason discovered a new passion and set a goal of completing at least one 5K run every month. By the end of that first year, he had crossed more than 10 finish lines.
Last year alone, he ran 1,036 miles.
The man who once had to stop halfway up his apartment stairs was now chasing finish lines.
Taking on an even bigger challenge
Then another invitation arrived — this time from a friend asking Jason to compete in a triathlon.
This challenge would involve more than running. He would also need to swim and bike.
Jason’s first response was emphatic: “No way.”
But the idea stayed with him. Eventually, he decided to give it a try. And once he committed, he went all in.
His first triathlon included a 300-meter swim, a 12.5-mile bike ride, and a 5K run. When Jason crossed the finish line, he surprised himself.
“I didn’t die! In fact, I actually felt good.”
So he kept going.
By September 2025, Jason had earned a podium finish and qualified for the USA Triathlon National Championships in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
He’ll compete there in August 2026, and we can’t wait to cheer him on.
Ready for the next starting line

Today, Jason trains like a true athlete. He swims several times a week, bikes indoors and outdoors, and runs daily.
Those 15 steps that once felt like a mountain are now part of his warm-up. Every starting line he approaches — and every finish line he crosses — shows just how far he has come since taking that first step toward changing his life.
