Subcutaneous vs. Visceral Fat

Visceral vs. Subcutaneous Fat - what’s the difference and how does it affect weight loss? I thought this would be a great topic to write about because sometimes we get calls from people who say that they are feeling better and seeing signs of improvement with their energy, sleeping, A1C numbers, etc but they are not seeing the difference on the outside just yet.
This can be because subcutaneous fat and visceral fat react differently. Fat is just a fact of life and yes, there is such a thing as healthy body fat. Adults who are at an ideal weight for their height have around 40 billion fat cells. Adults who are considered overweight for their height can have up to 80 to 120 billion. Research has shown that fat cells are very dynamic and intelligent, and they send out signals that affect everything from our brain and other organs, to our mood and ability to reproduce. There are two types of body fat- subcutaneous fat and visceral fat.
Let’s talk about the differences… Subcutaneous fat is found right underneath the skin, and is the type of fat that you can grasp with your hand on any part of your body. This type of fat is very resistant to fat-burning. Visceral fat is different. This type of fat is deep inside of your body, surrounding your organs, and can even wrap around your organs. This is also the more dangerous type of fat. This type of fat is a lot easier to burn than subcutaneous fat. This fat is also linked to numerous health conditions.
Visceral fat works in mysterious ways- for example, two men of the same age can have the same BMI (body mass index), and one can have five liters of visceral fat within them, and the other man can have only 2 liters. So, if you find yourself feeling good about your new GOLO life but are not yet seeing outward results remember that this could be that visceral fat responds first to the stimulation of eating correctly and exercising, and the subcutaneous fat has a delayed reaction to it all. It is easy to get discouraged on a weight loss journey when you feel like you are giving your all and not yet seeing the results, but it’s important to remember that you ARE getting results - things are just improving on the inside first.
