Giving Up Soda

Of all of the unhealthy food and drinks we have available to us on a daily basis, soda has got to be one of the worst. It is also one of the hardest habits to break. Today, we are going to look at what makes it so unhealthy, what happens to your body when you stop drinking it, and some tips on how to quit for good!

The ingredients in soda are truly terrifying. High fructose corn syrup, caramel color, phosphoric acid, citric acid, sodium citrate, brominated vegetable oil, and sodium benzoate to name a few. Some even have artificial colorings, such as Yellow 5. The amount of sugar is also scary- 10 tsp. per 12 oz. can…the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that the average adult only have 6 tsp ALL DAY! We all know that sugar is very harmful to your body and if you are drinking multiple cans a day, that can add up very quickly! And if you think you are being healthier by drinking diet soda, you’re wrong. Diet sodas contain aspartame, which is one of the worst artificial sweeteners.

Soda is an addiction, because it feels good when you are consuming it, but it is wreaking havoc on your body. Pretty much every organ in your body benefits when you stop.

• Heart- When you stop drinking sugary drinks, you significantly decrease your risk of chronic heart disease. Studies have shown that soda also raises your blood pressure.

• Brain- When you drink a soda, one of the things you are looking for is that caffeine boost. It may happen temporarily, but studies have shown that long-term consumption of sugar can lead to impaired learning, memory, and overall cognitive function. Soda also increases your risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.

• Teeth- Soda destroys your teeth. The acids in it cause erosion of your tooth enamel, which you cannot get back once it is gone. You are also more likely to get cavities.

• Bladder- Soda is a diuretic, which means you will need to urinate more frequently and urgently. It has also been known to irritate the bladder and cause bladder or urinary tract infections.

• Bones- Drinking soda increases your risk of osteoporosis.

• Kidneys- Soda increases your risk of kidney disease and kidney failure.

• Weight- You will be surprised how easily you will lose weight once you kick the soda habit! You will also lower your risk of Type 2 diabetes.

I’m convinced, so how do I quit? You can either quit cold turkey, or you can slowly decrease your intake until you can go without it. Don’t be concerned if you feel sluggish, irritable or are getting headaches while coming off soda. That’s simply the effect of the toxins leaving your body. Here are a few alternatives to help you get through it:

1. Kombucha, which is fizzy just like soda

2. Sparkling water, which is fizzy - add lime juice or lemons to give it some flavor

3. Infused waters with fruits and cucumber

4. Coconut water, make sure it is 100% coconut water with no added ingredients

5. Hot or iced green, black or herbal tea

6. Hot or iced coffee, sweetened with sugar in the raw, honey and/or cinnamon
