Chia Seeds
Ch-ch-ch-chia! I bet a lot of us remember that commercial that we could never get out of our heads! Today’s post is about chia seeds- tiny, tiny seeds that contain big nutritious benefits! Chia means “strength” in the Mayan language. These seeds have been used for centuries, mostly for energy. In fact, Aztec warriors ate chia seeds in order to sustain high energy and endurance- just one spoonful of seeds could keep them energized for 24 hours! They include many nutrients and minerals, such as fiber, fats, protein, manganese, phosphorus, calcium, zinc, copper, sulphur, iron, iodine, magnesium, omega 3, and vitamins A, B, E and D.
Here are some other great benefits of the amazing Chia Seed -
• Skin- Chia seeds are full of antioxidants, which speed up the skin’s repair systems and prevent further damage.
• Digestive system- Since chia is high in fiber, your digestive system will thank you. Chia seeds absorb water and expand in the stomach when they are eaten, which helps you feel fuller longer. They also create a gelatin-like substance in the stomach, which can work as a prebiotic, supporting the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut.
• Heart health- Chia has the ability to reverse inflammation, regulate cholesterol and lower blood pressure.
• Diabetes- The fiber in chia also helps to balance your body’s insulin levels, which means they are extremely helpful to those with diabetes. They can also reduce visceral adipose tissue, which is a belly fat that effects your metabolism and is a component of obesity.
• Energy- Those Aztecs were ahead of their time, it’s been proven that consuming chia seeds enhances energy and exercise performance, the same way sports drinks would, but without all the added sugar.
• Bone and dental health- Chia contains lots of calcium, which helps maintain bone and tooth strength and mass and the zinc fights plaque and bad breath.
You might be thinking, “Well, how do I eat them??”
1. Soak your chia seeds in water, milk or overnight oats.
2. Pulverize the seeds in a blender and use the powder as a flour in pancakes, breads, muffins or pastas.
3. And of course, you can just eat a spoonful and call it a day!
