All About Diatomaceous Earth

Have you ever heard of diatomaceous earth? It sounds like something from the time of the dinosaurs, doesn’t it? Well, to be honest, it technically is! Diatomaceous earth (or DE) is an all-natural product made from fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. Silica, an important mineral, makes up 85% of it. There are two types- food grade and non-food grade. The one we are discussing today is food grade, which is safe to be taken internally by humans.

What does it do and how do I use it?

• Detoxification- DE can be used to detox the body, killing parasites and viruses that will contribute to illnesses. It can also reduce odors, cleanse the digestive tract, boost liver function and absorb harmful toxins. To take internally, take about one teaspoon of food-grade diatomaceous earth with water once a day. It's best used on an empty stomach at least one hour before or two hours after eating.

• Purifies water- DE is used in many water filtration products. It is able to filter very fine particles that are otherwise passed through filter papers.

• Kills insects in your home- DE is a safe alternative to other pest control products, it absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects’ exoskeletons which causes them to dehydrate and die. It can eliminate bed bugs, dust mites, cockroaches, ants, and can even be used to treat fleas on your pets. To use for flea control: Comb your pet over with a flea comb first to get rid of the worst of them. Then powder them from head to toe, roll over and powder the legs and underbelly. Brush against the fur if you can to help rub it in. Remember to only use the FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth.

• Improves joint, bone and ligament health- A 2007 study published in the Journal of Nutrition Health and Aging concluded that dietary silicon is beneficial to bone and connective tissue and helps prevent low bone mass. It also helps with normal bone metabolism and joint formation. This is due to the fact that the silica helps wit the synthesis of collagen.
